We seeded 64 of the world's greatest comfort foods into a March Madness-style bracket. Our entire 28-person staff voted in every round. There were tears. There were heated Slack arguments. HR had to get involved once. Here's how it went down.
The Format
64 dishes. Single elimination. Four regions: Carbs United, Cheese Conference, Soup & Stew Division, and the Sweet Sixteen bracket. Each matchup was decided by anonymous staff vote. Lobbying was technically prohibited but absolutely happened.
🏆 The Final Four
Semifinal 1: Mac & Cheese vs. Chicken Soup
This was brutal. Mac and cheese — specifically the baked, breadcrumb-topped, pull-apart variety — went up against classic chicken noodle soup. The kind your grandma makes when you're sick. Mac and cheese won 16-12, but several voters admitted to crying about it.
Semifinal 2: Pizza vs. Grilled Cheese & Tomato Soup
The combo entry was controversial from the start. "You can't enter two foods as one!" argued the pizza faction. But we allowed it because grilled cheese without tomato soup is a tragedy. Pizza won 15-13 in the closest vote of the tournament.
"I've covered wars. I've reported from disaster zones. Nothing prepared me for the emotional devastation of watching mashed potatoes lose to French fries in the Round of 16."— Marcus Cole, Culture Writer, barely holding it together
🏆 The Championship: Mac & Cheese vs. Pizza
The two titans. The unstoppable force meets the immovable object. Mac and cheese — warm, gooey, impossibly comforting — versus pizza, the food that has never once been a bad idea regardless of time, place, or state of mind.
The vote was 15-13.
Your 2026 Comfort Food Champion: Pizza. 🍕
Pizza won because of its versatility. Cold pizza for breakfast? Comfort. Greasy slice after a bad day? Comfort. Fancy wood-fired Margherita on a date? Still comfort. Pizza transcends mood, occasion, and cultural boundaries. It is the universal comfort food.
The Full Bracket Results
Most Shocking Upset
Ramen over Fried Chicken (Round of 32). The fried chicken contingent still hasn't recovered. A late-night ramen coalition formed a voting bloc and executed a perfectly coordinated coup.
Biggest Blowout
Chocolate Chip Cookies over Jello (Round of 64). 27-1. The single Jello vote was anonymous but we have our suspicions, Kevin.
Most Controversial Matchup
Mashed Potatoes vs. French Fries (Round of 16). Same ingredient, two forms. French fries won 15-13, but the mashed potato defenders have formally requested a recount.
The Bottom Line
Every food in this bracket is a champion in its own right. Comfort food isn't about being the "best" — it's about being there when you need it. But if we absolutely had to pick one dish to eat for the rest of our lives on a rainy day under a blanket? It's pizza. It was always pizza.
